(New York, NY – July 5, 2011) – Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announces that R. Wayne Stocks, P.E., LEED AP, the firm’s leader of the Mid-Atlantic and U.S Southern regions, has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the Thornton Tomasetti Foundation.
The Thornton Tomasetti Foundation is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization established in February 2008. One of the Foundation’s primary goals is to provide financial support for individuals and organizations pursuing philanthropic activities related to building engineering, design or technology.
Mr. Stocks has 23 years of experience with all types of structures including educational facilities, hospitals, sports and entertainment venues, and national monuments.
He is a LEED accredited professional, as well as a registered professional engineer in Maryland and Virginia.

For the past four years, Mr. Stocks has presented at the Williamsburg Middle School’s Career Day, where he speaks about his experiences in structural engineering. Since 2001, he has lectured at the Arlington County Public Schools Summer Laureate Program, “Buildings and Bridges in Earthquake Regions.”
Mr. Stocks has worked on notable projects such as the Defense Information Systems Agency Headquarters and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C, John Hopkins Hospital’s new clinical building in Baltimore, Md., and the FBI Academy Firing Range roof in Quantico, Va.
Mr. Stocks holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University, as well as a Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW), and is a member of Thornton Tomasetti’s Member IM Executive Steering Committee, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and The Structural Engineering Institute (SEI). Mr. Stocks is also a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

The Thornton Tomasetti Foundation, a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization established in February 2008, has two primary missions including funding fellowships, scholarships and internships for undergraduate students, and those planning to pursue graduate studies in building engineering, design or technology and providing financial support for individuals and organizations pursuing philanthropic activities related to building engineering, design or technology. Key elements of the program are college scholarships, traveling internships, and grants to, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
